Board History
The Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners was established by the Louisiana Legislature in 1974, with the primary responsibility of protecting the people of Louisiana by regulating the practice of chiropractic. The Board was created under Louisiana Revised Statutes 37:2801, which set the legal foundation for chiropractic licensure and professional oversight in the state.
Following the enactment of Louisiana's chiropractic licensing laws, the first Chiropractic Examining Board was appointed to organize the licensure process, develop examination standards, and begin regulating the profession. Early Board members represented a variety of chiropractic educational backgrounds, reflecting the Legislature's intent to ensure balanced representation and prevent any single chiropractic school from dominating the regulatory body.
In its early years, the Board experienced a significant influx of applications from chiropractors seeking licensure under the new regulatory framework. Processing these applications required substantial effort, and the Board's work was recognized as essential in establishing a credible and accountable chiropractic profession in Louisiana.
In December 2000, the Board adopted its official mission statement, further clarifying its commitment to public protection, professional standards, and ethical practice.
Today, individuals seeking licensure as chiropractors in Louisiana must complete extensive education and clinical training. Applicants must meet undergraduate prerequisites before entering an accredited chiropractic college, where they complete a rigorous Doctor of Chiropractic program. Because licensure requirements and scopes of practice vary across the United States, the Board carefully evaluates each applicant to ensure they meet or exceed Louisiana's standards for education, competency, and professional readiness.
Through diligent oversight and a continued commitment to public safety, the Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners upholds its longstanding mission: to protect the public, maintain high standards of chiropractic practice, and support the integrity and advancement of the profession throughout the state.
Goals
The Louisiana Board of Chiropractic Examiners is dedicated to ensuring that the people of Louisiana receive safe, ethical, and effective chiropractic care. To fulfill this mission, the Board oversees the examination and licensure of chiropractors and enforces the laws and regulations governing chiropractic practice in the state.
The Board also serves the public by providing access to information such as license verification and general guidance about the chiropractic profession.
The Board and its staff work to ensure that Louisiana residents are served by competent and trustworthy chiropractic professionals and a consumer member. This is accomplished by establishing clear standards for professional conduct, monitoring compliance with those standards and the accepted community standard of care and addressing issues that impact both the public protection and the profession. The Board is committed to strengthening the chiropractic profession while safeguarding the health and well-being of the public.
